Original diagnosis/description

Infructescence a raceme bearing oblate capsular fruits with persistent styles. Fruits circular in transverse view, wide-elliptic in longitudinal view; opening by slits extending topographically above each style. Styles (nine-) 13 to 16, persistent, arising from the external margin of each carpel, about one-quarter of the distance from base to apex of the fruit. Stylar orientation variable; commonly concave with respect to the axis of symmetry of the fruit toward fruit apex, otherwise convex (recurved). Beneath each style is a circular to elliptical domed protrusion with a central depression (interpreted as nectary). Beneath the whorl of nectaries is a raised circular rim (interpreted to mark former perianth position); base of fruit and junction with pedicel smooth, without staminal scars.

Etymology

Poly- (Gr = many) + stylum (Gr = column, style).
