Original diagnosis/description

Leaves with a narrowly ovate base that narrows gradually towards leaf apex. Costa poorly differentiated, occupying more than half of the leaf width in the leaf base. Abaxial surface of the costa with a median longitudinal groove.

Etymology

From Latin canaliculus, small gutter. The name refers to the longitudinal groove of the abaxial costa.
