Original diagnosis/description

In the wood, growth ring boundary clearly distinct due to having radially flattened fibers. Vessel porosity diffuse, and vessel grouping predominantly solitary (more than 90%of the vessels), rarely 2-3 vessels in radial multiples, vessel density 100-200 vessels/mm2. Diameter of vessel elements 30-50 µm. Axial parenchyma diffuses and not common. Intervessel pits opposite. Type of perforation plate scalariform and the number of bars is 6-10. Ray width 1-3 seriate in narrow rays and 4-10 seriate (mainly 4-5 seriate) in larger ones. Rays heterocellular, body ray cells procumbent with mostly 1-4 rows of square marginal ray cells around the procumbent cells. The numbers of rays per mm range 7-13. Perforated ray cells present. In wider axial parenchyma cells, prismatic crystals present. Widths of the axial parenchyma cells irregular, some of them larger or some others narrower. Fiber-tracheids with distinctly bordered pits common.

Etymology

The species epithet “unalakkemikii” is for the name of the greatest palaeobotanist in fossil wood descriptions in Türkiye

Stratigraphy

Neogene, Miocene, Burdigalian
Early Miocene. Several radiometric dating studies have suggested the age of the western part of the GVP in the range of 24.83 ± 2.01–
21.79 ± 4.93 Ma to 18.2 ± 0.8 Ma (e.g., Toprak et al., 1996; Türkecan et al. 1991; Keller et al., 1992; Akkemik et al., 2016). Based on these studies, the age of the area can be given in a wide range of early Miocene as 24.8–8 Ma (Aquitanian - Burdigalian).
