Original diagnosis/description

Same as the genus:
Filaments with apical–basal polarity defined by a holdfast located at the base of the thallus. Cells of filaments are cylindrical and sub-equal. Numerous stellate clusters of spines representing modified branches are connected to the filaments. Reproductive units develop from cell layers inside the spines.

Etymology

Specific epithet is from the Greek ‘astroplethes’ = full of stars.
