Original diagnosis/description

Secondary xylem, diffuse porous wood. Vessels circular to oval in outline, solitary, in radial multiples, and/or diagonal patterns. Simple perforation plates. Intervessel pits, from oval to circular, alternate, and vestured. Vessel-ray pits with distinct borders; similar to intervessel pits in size and shape throughout the ray cell. Axial paratracheal parenchyma aliform, aliform confluent, lozenge–aliform to winged-aliform. Parenchyma in irregular and discontinuous narrow bands or lines up to three cells wide. Marginal parenchyma. Parenchyma cells in strand. Rays homocellular, procumbent cells, 1–2 seriate. All elements storied: rays, vessels, parenchyma, and fibres.

The generic name is a combination of Goniorrhachis, after the extant genus, and -xylon refers to wood.
