Original diagnosis/description

Seed small, orthotropous, and chlamydospermous. Seed envelope enclosing a thin integument and nucellus. Seed envelope broadly obovate to fusiform. Narrowly ellipsoidal and sometimes subtly four angled in transverse section. Envelope consisting of a smooth outer layer, covering a distinctively rugulate sclerenchymatous inner layer formed by two zones of cells. Seed envelope apically extended to form a shoulder below the apex of the micropylar projection and a short collar-like projection where the inner layer of the envelope surrounds the micropylar tube. Integument free from the seed envelope except at the base and extended apically into a long micropylar tube with a distinct inner and outer epidermis. Micropylar canal open apically and closed farther down. Inner surface of the seed envelope smooth, without apical papillae.

Etymology

The genus is named in honor of paleobotanist Eugenia Bugdaeva (Vladivostok) for her many contributions to paleobotany and especially her work with Mesozoic-age fossil plants from Mongolia.
