Original diagnosis/description
As for the genus with the following additions. Leaves appressed, dorsiventrally flattened, sessile and slightly decurrent. Leaf apices ranging from acute, to convex, to falcate with a short spinelike tip. Fibers absent within the leaf mesophyll. Leaf epidermis well developed and composed of thick-walled isodiametric cells. Stomatal complexes well defined, ovate to elliptical in outline, crowded, and irregularly oriented. Guard cells sunken, elliptical in outline, surrounded by a ring of four to six subsidiary cells. Polar subsidiary cells depressed relative to the level of the other subsidiary and guard cells as seen from the inner cuticular surface. Subsidiary cells lacking cuticular thickenings or papillae on the inner cuticle surface. Seed cones ca. 7.0–32 mm long, ca. 6.0–15 mm wide, variable in lateral outline, ranging from elliptical, to ovate, to oblong, to obovate. Bract-scale complexes borne approximately at right angles to the cone axis proximally but more acute distally. Bracts ca. 4.0–7.0 mm long, ca. 2.0–5.0 mm wide, and ca. 227–264 mm thick. Branching resin canal system absent in the bract-scale complex. Seed bodies slightly flattened to ellipsoidal, bilaterally symmetrical to asymmetrical, obovate, or slightly reniform in outline. Seed size, including the wing, ca. 4.0–6.0 mm long, 1.0–3.0 mm wide. No interseminal ridges between adjacent seeds.
Etymology
From the Latin foliata (“leafy”), referring to the foliate (i.e., dorsiventrally flattened and not thickened distally) bract-scale complexes of the seed cone.
